Bump in the Road
Thursday, October 15, 2009 at 7:11PM Ah, so it did not go so well. Potty training can obviously be a daunting task and many lucky families have an easy time with it. I was hoping to be one of those moms. No such luck. A lot of it has to do with timing. A was 2.5 years old - possibly ready. But with her strong personality, it just wasn't HER time.
After consulting with her pediatrician to make sure she wouldn't be emotionally scarred for going back into pullups, we decided to give it a rest for a bit. I am happy to say that the first day she was out of her underwear was the first day she told us she had to pee! Alas, it really has not happened much since then but she is happier and we are happier. The stress and pressure to perform are gone and life is back to normal.
We will try again in a couple of months or so and see how it goes. I think all parents out there should not be afraid to "fail" and take some time. Bottom line, it will be a long and painful road if your tot is having less than 75-50% accuracy after the first week or so. For A, she had telltale signs she was not ready. 1) She could care less if she was wet. She would rather continue playing or eating completely soaked. It didn't bother her and she never cared to tell anyone she needed to be changed. 2) She NEVER told us when she had to pee. It was our responsibility to be taking her every so often to make sure we caught something. This meant many trips where she was unsuccessful. She would complain a LOT about being dragged to the potty because she obviously did not have to go. 3) She is not interested in rewards. Candy, chocolates, stickers are not her obsession. She is not ready just yet for a true reward system and since she doesn't like attention, any accolades, applause, party hoopla are totally out of the question.
All that being said, we knew it was time to move on. I cannot tell you how happy we all are. And yeah for pullups! She goes (completely by herself) to the potty atleast once a day. She'll announce as I am making breakfast or cleaning up, that she has gone peepee. I am sure one day we'll be ready for the next step.
For now, we'll be dealing with a fever and a possibly postponed trip to Disney. :(
